Another Great Year for Cinemafantastique

Cinemafantastique 2 was what indie filmmaking is all about, genuine ass-kicking passion for what you love. There was such a great energy flowing through the theatre that I’m sure I was not the only one inspired to start the ‘next one’ sooner rather than later. We wish all the filmmakers the very best with their projects! Some of the films are still running the film fest circuit and others have started to get picked up for distribution, please do yourself a favour and track these films down (by legit means please), you will not be disappointed!

Thank you so much to everyone who donated, participated, and came out to Cinemafantastique 2! We had a great bunch of films and a truly awesome group of people in attendance. Thank you to UBC and the UBC Film Society for letting us use the Norm Theatre, and in fact be the last ones in the theatre for 2 years while everything is torn down and rebuilt.

Cinemafantastique 3 will be opening for submissions shortly, so stay tuned to Twitter and the like for updates!

The newest (and last) round of CINEMAFANTASTIQUE ticket pre-sales are live now!

Three days of fantastique films of the obscure, the hilariously horrific, and the sexy & surreal at THE NORM THEATRE at UBC, JULY 8-10, 2016!

TICKETS AVAILABLE ON INDIE-GO-GO! http://igg.me/at/cf2tickets

Now in our second year, following 2015’s amazing Cinemafantastique and Tromafest (which featured a very special all-day appearance by the legendary Lloyd Kaufman), we present another exciting lineup of the best in new fantastique cinema and continue our commitment to providing Vancouver’s most innovative film festival experience.

CINEMAFANTASTIQUE 2 at the NORM THEATRE in VANCOUVER, FRI JULY 8 – SUN JULY 9, 2016!!!

So, what is different about this year, besides our exciting new lineup of films?

NEW TICKET PRICING!

This year, our ticket prices are purely by suggested donation. You pay what you want to see up to three days of films!

As part of our philosophy for a democratized film festival experience, we have decided to adjust our ticket prices to reflect our commitment to empowering filmmakers and audiences. As a patron, you can now pay what you feel comfortable with to attend the entire three-day festival!

Below are our suggested donation tiers:

  • $10 for a full day.
  • $30 for the whole fest (three days!!!)
  • Can’t make it to the fest? $15 for a VALLEY OF THE RATS “cast & crew screening version” digital download – our newest film (playing on Friday July 8th) and likely to be the only available version of this particular early cut of the film – in a file you can store and keep!
  • $25 for the VALLEY perk AND a very limited special edition Blu-ray copy of our 2015 festival hit GLASS that includes exclusive director’s commentary.
  • $45 for EVERYTHING.
  • Sorry, there are no t-shirt perks on this round of ticket pre-sales. There will still be t-shirts available on-site (while sizes/supllies last).

“But wait, didn’t you just say ‘you can pay whatever you want?’ Can’t I just get in for free?

As much as we would like to provide our patrons with an immersive festival experience for free, we have to set a minimum suggested donation in order for us to cover the costs associated with hosting the film festival and to meet the “membership” requirements of our film society. So, where then does the money from these ticket sales go…?

All ticket proceeds will go directly towards making the best damned Cinemafantastique 2 we possibly can, which includes for the first time ever: our Vampyros Lesbos Psychedelic Dance Party!!

The Shivers Film Society is a non-profit organization, so all financing goes directly into the festival itself, including the venue costs and alcohol rentals! Since we keep our submission fees as low as possible for filmmakers, the majority of our festival’s funding comes directly from your donations to this campaign!

Additionally, proceeds will be put towards helping potential special guests arrive in Vancouver during the film fest, so that they can engage with audiences and film fans in person and participate in Cinemafantastique 2.

So far, our confirmed guests are:

  • Steve Balderson (director of HELL TOWN) plus cast members
  • Ryan LaPlante (director of HOLY HELL) plus cast members
  • Benjamin and Rachel Moody (director and producer of LAST GIRL STANDING)
  • Jimmie Gonzales (director of THE RED MAN)
  • Richard Mogg (director of BIGFOOT ATE MY BOYFRIEND)
  • Cast and crew of VALLEY OF THE RATS

Continuing our platform of sexy, cerebral, funny, and erotic genre films, we are expanding our programming this year to incorporate a majority of independent feature films from all over the globe that quite literally nail this concept, while we lightly contextualize these exciting new films with a couple of our old-school favourites, including a 1983 arthouse vampire opus that will serve as a little tribute to the late David Bowie.

Some of the exciting independent films that we’ll be screening and celebrating this summer are Anna (Viva) Biller’s The Love Witch, the Japanese/US Slit-Mouthed Woman in L.A., veteran indie filmmaker Ron Bonk’s latest revenge-horror comedy She Kills, the new erotic Lovecraftian sci-fi horror Harvest Lake (which co-stars Vancouver’s Tristan Risk); plus one of the best horror films to come around in the last decade (we mean that!) in director Benjamin Moody’s head-flipping Last Girl Standing, and as if that weren’t enough, we’ll also be screening one of the best Christmas exploitation films we’ve ever seen: Todd Nunes’ All Through the House. But what can we say? – these are only half of the amazing films that we’re fortunate enough to have participating in Cinemafantastique 2 this summer! Seriously (see our serious face? 😐 …) the lineup this year is pretty effin’ special (in an orgasmic way) and you’ll walk away wide-eyed and starry-brained, we guarantee it. And we’ll back that guarantee. How’s that?  Well, firstly, because Cinemafantastique 2  will be awesome, and secondly, if you see any flick (feature film or full short-film block) that you 100% dislike then we’ll offer you free merch on the spot, no questions asked.
The opening night screening will be a gala celebration for Vancouver filmmaker Richard Mogg as we world-premiere his latest opus of kitsch, bad taste, and wild humour titled Bigfoot Ate My Boyfriend. Richard will also be on-hand for a Q&A, to be followed by a Friday night celebration at The Pit Pub (on the premises).

Want to know more about the perks? Easy. This isn’t so much a donation campaign as it is a ticket pre-sale  campaign, and with each ticket (PERK) you get a totally fantastique bang for your buck. Each perk provides either an all-day pass ($10 – cheap!); an all-day pass with an exclusive Cinemafantastique 2 T-shirt ($25); an ALL-ACCESS PASS (all three days) ($30); or all three days with said exclusive T-shirt ($45). Easy-peasy, lemon-squeezy. Nobody said we weren’t dirt cheap.
